A Cosy & Unique Cooking Show on Netflix: The Big Family Cooking Showdown

netflix the big family cooking showdown review

AH! Finally, somewhere I can talk about this show (other than bugging my excitements to Claus with every dishes made by a family).

I am not a huge TV show fan nor even a huge Netflix user, well, I am just not a TV watcher. And The Big Family Cooking Showdown is my first ‘non-Asian’ series/shows I ever completed because it’s something very easy to watch and also it brings in the good and happy feelings while watching it without feeling too anxty since it’s supposed to be a “contest”.

The Big Family Cooking Showdown is a British Cooking Show with 12 episodes of an hour each. I just find this show very cozy because it’s a “contest” between families cooking their best home dishes and not between real chefs. The judges of the show are Michelin star chef Giorgio Locatelli and cookery teacher Rosemary Shrager. For more details about the show and how it works go to Wikipedia.

I really like the fact that this show is not only about bringing the fanciest dish to the table but rather bringing the different culture from each family. The show includes families with different backgrounds and nationality. They have Indian, Pakistanis, Chinese, British, Italians, Iranians, Swedes, Caribbeans and Syrians. So all of their dishes are very different and will wow you away. Watching each episode will certainly make you drool, well at least I did. Not really safe if you watch it when you are hungry.

The interaction of the families is the second thing I enjoyed the most. I think cooking together is a special moment to bring people together. Seeing the family members working as a team in the show is very interesting. They take the show seriously but at the same time, you get to see how light-hearted they are, which makes you in a really good mood while watching it.

If I had to choose my favourite family, I would pick the Gangotras.

They are 3 Indian sisters-in-law living together. They make great dishes, have great personalities but also very funny. They will actually roast each other but they don’t take it seriously at all. They really have funny facial expressions, almost like when you roast your BFF or your little sister. That’s what I like the most about these girls. There was this 1 episode towards the end of the series, baking was not the forte of one of these sisters, Bobby. So one of the tasks she gets asked by the other 2 was to cool down the cake. She voluntarily walked out the barn to take a walk with the cakes to cool it down. 😂 All she said was, “I think they just wanted me to be out of the kitchen to be quite honest.” At the same time, you know they are taking it with a grain of salt and that what makes me giggle a lot.

If you are looking for a not-to-serious cozy show to relax and to learn or get inspired for your meals, I think you will enjoy this one. I really hope they will have a second season too!

Melissa’s points: 8/10
IMBd: 7/10

I really hope you enjoyed or will enjoy this show as much as I do ❤
