I recently purchased a Sephora’s Favourites Dry Shampoo collection back in September while they have their Family and Friend’s sale. I always liked the Sephora Favourites boxes because they usually have the best sellers in one box with a great bundle price. I started using dry shampoos during last year and I thought it would be quite handy to have new ones and in the travel format. This box comes with 5 different dry shampoos: Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo, Bumble and bumble Prêt-à-powder Très Invisible (Nourishing) Dry Shampoo, Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo, IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo and the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo.
While having all these different brands of dry shampoos, I thought I should try them out and write a post to compare each brand and rank them to my own standards.
Just like makeup, the performance is always different on each individual, whether if the type of skin they have, their preference, etc. However, I just find hair products are much trickier because it’s something that is not often reviewed on the internet or “visually” compared (if you know what I mean 😝). And speaking in my own experience, I find hair products are just a bit harder to understand without actually trying it because there are so many hair conditions and hair types.
– My hair type –
Just to set the context of these rankings and reviews, I will give you my hair profile so you know what to relate to.
I have straight Asian hair with a bit of wave from mid-length. It’s not fine but nor corse. I would say it’s in the middle of both and dense so with a bit of volume. I wash my hair every day because I have a very oily hair. At the end of each working day or a shower, the roots from the top of my head get oily but from the mid-length, it feels like fresh hair.
– Ranking the 5 dry shampoos –
All these dry shampoos are tried at least 3 attempts, in different scenarios, such as: on a super or slightly oily day. All these products are the best sellers on Sephora, so it was a great experiment to try them all out. Since I tested each of them in different situations, it makes me realize that they do perform differently, especially on other people. Hence, which explains why all of them are highly rated on Sephora but some didn’t work for me.
– Comparison in a glance –
*The comparison is based on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the poorest.
– Product details –
Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo
This dry shampoo has a lot of good comments and I always wanted to try it. The packaging is super fun which appeals to me. Product wise: for the amount I needed to use did not perform as well. I needed to put quite a lot of it to get it to a clean look. Even then, it doesn’t feel as “heavy duty” as other dry shampoos.
If you are not the type to wash your hair every day or you have slightly less oily hair, this could be good for you. It could give a good natural fluffy look for fine hair.
p.s: For some reason, this is the only dry shampoo that itches my scalp! 🤨
Bumble and bumble Prêt-à-powder Très Invisible (Nourishing) Dry Shampoo
This is one of my favourite shampoos. 😍 If it’s not the #1 out of the 5, this could come second. I have tried this dry shampoo before and I am very pleased with it. The scent is excellent. Not like other dry shampoos, this featured to give volume, which is true to its words. When my hair gets greasy, it will weight my hair down making it look very flat and extra oily looking but the volumizing feature takes effect instantly, you can really see the difference and make your hair looks soft and silky.
** Not only the performance is great, being a dry shampoo completely invisible is really useful.
Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo
This one though! 😱 I really loved the performance of it. Within just a small amount of spray, your hair becomes fresh as new. This is definitely the best one out of the 5 for its absorbance. It does have a little bit of white-cast, but it’s not crazy; makes your hair look extra natural too.
** The longevity of this is amazing, totally recommend if you don’t mind the smell.
The only thing that it didn’t like at all is the scent. It has a very strong wood note.
IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo
Other than the Bumble & Bumble, this is the other one that could make either to the top 1 or 2. The absorbance of oil is perfect. You only need a small amount to the roots and you are good to go. The scent is not as good as B&B, it has a slight woody note too but it isn’t as overwhelming as the Dry Bar.
It had a grey-cast but it’s super easy to shake it off.
** The hold between washes is very great, it won’t fail you!
Notes: remember to read the instructions. After you spray it, you need to wait for the cooling sensation of the product. That is when the magic takes effect. If you shake it through your hair before that, the product will not work.
Also, don’t overdo the product, otherwise your hair would feel rubbery to the touch. It could be uncomfortable.
p.s: This could be the best for super oily hair types because it’s pretty heavy duty.
Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo
This is my least favourite. I tried this dry shampoo before and it did not perform as the ratings on Sephora claim. For some reason, it makes my hair greasier even more than it is. To the look and the touch as well.
** It is always a hit or miss at each use and the hold between washes is very poor. As if it is only good for a few hours and afterwards it makes your hair look worse.
The scent is very powerful. It smells good but very cologne and manly smell. The aerosol spray is too powerful as well. Almost feels like it can blow you away! 🌬

If you have any good recommendations, especially drugstore ones, let me know! I am always looking for good dry shampoos. Hope you find this helpful as well!
